Phased Reconstruction of Cook Avenue Parking Lot Underway in Madison

MADISON — The Borough of Madison contractor, DLS Contracting, Inc., began the phased reconstruction of the Cook Avenue Parking Lot in June 2024.

The project included the installation of complete curbing, improved drainage systems, traffic flow changes, rain gardens, historic lighting, milling, and paving. The two phases of work were expected to last approximately 150 days.

Half of the Cook Avenue Parking Lot was closed to all vehicular traffic during the project. Access to the businesses from the rear may have experienced minor impacts.

Starting June 15, 2024, Merchant Parking Permit Holders were not permitted to park in the lot, and the Parking office sent out information about accommodations for those permit holders as soon as possible.

We appreciated the community’s cooperation as we worked to enhance the Cook Avenue Parking Lot.

*Please note that the project schedule was weather-dependent and subject to change. Updates were posted to the borough’s webpage and communicated through social media and AlertMadison notifications as needed.

BOONTON TOWNSHIP — On Monday, August 26, 2024, Boonton Township police patrols conducted routine surveillance on Kingsland Road when they observed a vehicle with no license plates stopped in the roadway.

Upon approaching the vehicle, officers contacted the driver, Paul Sanchez, 28, of Boonton. Open containers of alcohol were visible in the driver’s compartment.

After further conversation with Mr. Sanchez, officers conducted standardized field sobriety tests, leading to his arrest for driving while intoxicated (DWI). Mr. Sanchez was transported to Boonton Township police headquarters, where a breath test revealed a blood alcohol content (BAC) twice the legal limit.

He was subsequently charged with DWI, unlicensed operation, operating an unregistered vehicle, driving an uninsured vehicle, possession of an open container in a motor vehicle, and reckless driving. Mr. Sanchez was released to a responsible party, and a future court date is pending.

BOONTON TOWNSHIP — On Thursday, August 8, Boonton Township Police patrols responded to a call for assistance at a local business. Upon arrival, they encountered Darryl Williamson, 54, of Harlem, NY, in the parking lot. During their conversation, Mr. Williamson requested a ride to a local train station, stating he had no other means of transportation.

However, further discussion and investigation revealed that Mr. Williamson had two outstanding criminal warrants—one from NJ Transit and another from Denville for burglary.

As a result, patrol officers arrested Mr. Williamson for the warrants and transported him to police headquarters for processing. He was subsequently turned over to the custody of the Denville Police Department.
