Florham Park Joins National Drug Take Back Day

0
October 26: Safely Dispose of Expired Prescriptions at Morris County Drop-Off Locations

FLORHAM PARK — National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 28, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Ridgedale Middle School, Florham Park.

Doors open for the safe and responsible disposal of your unused or expired RX medications. Help ensure a safer community by participating.

Unused prescription drugs can find their way into the wrong hands, and the outcome can be dangerous or even tragic.  Disposing of unused or expired medications in the trash can endanger humans who are looking for drugs or animals who are looking for food, and flushing the medications can endanger the local water supply.

Reminder: Nationwide Emergency Alert Test to Take Place Today

0

NEW JERSEY — On Wednesday, October. 4 at approximately 2:20 p.m., there will be a nationwide emergency alert test on coming ell phones, wireless devices, radios, and TVs. This is a standard test that occurs at least once every three years.

FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a national test of the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) on October 4 with a backup testing date of October 11, 2023 in the event of widespread severe weather or other significant events.

About the National Test

The national test will consist of two portions to help ensure that Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) and the Emergency Alert System (EAS) continue to be effective ways to warn the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level.

Information about the WEA test

The WEA portion of the test will be directed to all consumer cell phones. This will be the third nationwide test, but the second test to all cellular devices. The test message will display in either English or in Spanish, depending on the language settings of your device.

All major U.S. wireless providers participate in Wireless Emergency Alerts and will transmit the national test to their subscribers.

If your mobile phone is on and within range of an active cell tower from a participating wireless provider, you should receive the national test. Wireless providers will transmit the national test for 30 minutes, but your phone should only receive it once. The following can be expected from the nationwide WEA test:

For consumers, the message that appears on their phones will read: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”

Phones with the main menu set to Spanish will display: “ESTA ES UNA PRUEBA del Sistema Nacional de Alerta de Emergencia. No se necesita acción.”

WEA alerts are created and sent by authorized federal, state, local, tribal and territorial government agencies through IPAWS to participating wireless providers, which deliver the alerts to compatible handsets in geo-targeted areas. To help ensure that these alerts are accessible to the entire public, including people with disabilities, the alerts are accompanied by a unique tone and vibration.

Information about the EAS test

The EAS portion of the test is scheduled to last approximately one minute and will be conducted with the participation of radio and television broadcasters, cable systems, satellite radio and television providers, and wireline video providers.

The test message will be similar to the regular monthly EAS test messages with which the public is familiar. It will state: “This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, covering the United States from 14:20 to 14:50 hours ET. This is only a test. No action is required by the public.”

DOVER — In a move that underscores its commitment to inclusivity and safety, the Dover Police Department has introduced a Special Needs Registry for residents of Dover. The announcement, made at recent community outreach events, outlines the department’s proactive approach to ensure the well-being of individuals with disabilities within the town.

The registry is a voluntary service available to all residents with disabilities, whether they live, work, or attend school in Dover. The main goal of this initiative is to equip first responders with critical details about a registrant’s disability, emergency contact details, physical characteristics, and more. By having this information in advance, emergency personnel can ensure they provide more tailored and effective assistance during incidents.

Residents can access the registration forms in both English and Spanish on the Dover Police Department’s official website. Alternatively, the department’s Community Affairs Unit can email the forms upon request. Once filled out, these can be emailed back to [email protected] for processing.

In addition to the registry, the department also introduced the Blue Envelope Program, designed to assist vehicle drivers who might be on the Autism Spectrum. Necessary documents for this program, available in English and Spanish, can be found on the department’s website or obtained from the Community Affairs Unit.

For further details, questions, or concerns regarding the Special Needs Registry or the Blue Envelope Program, individuals are encouraged to reach out directly via email at [email protected].

Retired NJ State Police Veteran Remembered For Mix Of Strength And Kindness

Lt. Kevin Joseph Hanrahan

MORRIS COUNTY — When a man casts as imposing a shadow as retired New Jersey State Police Lt. Kevin Joseph Hanrahan, 61, his sudden and unexpected loss is felt as deeply as it is widely.

Shock mixed with profound sadness as word spread that a heart attack cut down a man who was known to be as kind as he was powerful.

Born in Paterson, Kevin had been a lifelong resident of Hawthorne. He served with distinction for 32 years in the New Jersey State Police, retiring as a Lieutenant assigned to Command of the Marine Services Bureau. Prior to that, Kevin also served for two years in the Passaic County Park Police in the Mounted Unit.

Hanrahan was headed to his son’s house in his 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 when he was stricken on Route 287 in Morris County around 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 27.

The dashcam shows the vehicle slowing to a stop as it rolled off the pavement before coming to rest at a metal guardrail.

Emergency responders furiously tried to revive the beloved veteran lawman all the way to Morristown Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Hanrahan was enjoying retirement, living part-time in Jupiter, FL, his son, Kevin, said. He regularly lifted weights and ran miles.

It just made his sudden death that much more shocking.

The pain was felt not just in Hanrahan’s Hawthorne hometown, which he never left. It also spread through the ranks of current and retired officers of both the state and Passaic County Park police departments and among those across the region.

Kevin enjoyed retirement by living part-time in beautiful Jupiter, FL, and was a lifelong fan of the Miami Dolphins. Kevin was survived by his beloved Paulette, son Kevin John Hanrahan and his fiancée Diana of Totowa, and daughter Nichole Hanrahan of Vernon. Kevin was the brother of John, Kelli, and Patricia. He is also survived by his dear nieces and nephews and countless friends. The funeral procession will depart at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 5, from the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne, for an 11:00 a.m. funeral mass at St. Anthony’s R.C. Church, 276 Diamond Bridge Avenue, Hawthorne. Cremation will take place privately. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 4 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Troopers United Foundation, at troopersunited.org please mention “Lt.
