BOONTON TOWNSHIP — Police arrested a man wanted for aggravated assault in connection with a shooting in East Orange during a routine traffic stop in Boonton Township earlier this month.

According to authorities, on February 16, officers were conducting traffic surveillance on Powerville Road when they noticed a vehicle with heavily tinted windows. Upon running a plate check, they discovered that the registered owner’s license and registration were suspended.

Subsequently, officers pulled over the vehicle and approached the driver, identified as 29-year-old Bernard James from East Orange. During the interaction, it was revealed that James had an active warrant for aggravated assault with the East Orange shooting.

James was taken into custody, and his vehicle was impounded pending a search warrant by East Orange detectives.

Additionally, James was cited for driving with a suspended license, having a suspended registration, and lacking liability insurance before being handed over to the East Orange Violent Crimes Task Force.
