MORRIS TOWNSHIP — Republican Township Committee candidates George Talarico, Joscelin Grizzetti and John Biehl responded to public statements by Democratic candidate Stephanie Lyon with what they called a straightforward commitment: every Morris Township resident deserves fair treatment and a government that listens.
The campaign pointed to an October 31 Morristown Green article reporting that Lyon described herself on TikTok as “an unapologetic, outspoken liberal and anti-capitalist.” Although she rejects the socialist label, the campaign said she echoes socialist views, citing her statement that “an elite few become richer and richer by exploiting working people who struggle to make ends meet.” The article reports that she stands by her opinions.
Discussing wealthy, elite, white, cisgender, straight men, Lyon said, “that’s not who I am the most concerned about,” according to the article. Her running mate, Jeremy Godwin, said, “I’m proud to run with Stephanie.”
“Residents should never have to wonder whether they fall into a category a candidate considers less deserving of concern,” the Talarico, Grizzetti and Biehl campaign said. “We will treat everyone fairly, including white men. Race, sex, income, sexual orientation and political affiliation will never determine whether someone deserves our attention or respect.
“Helping residents who face hardship is a responsibility we take seriously. We can meet that responsibility while treating every resident with dignity.”
The campaign said examining a candidate’s public positions is a legitimate part of choosing local leadership.
“The Township Committee sets our municipal budget, makes spending decisions and exercises authority over zoning and redevelopment. A candidate’s beliefs about business, private property and taxation matter. Residents have every right to ask how those beliefs would influence those decisions. Asking candidates to explain their own words is basic accountability.”
Talarico, Grizzetti and Biehl enter the closing days of the campaign with the endorsement of Convent Station Neighbors for Responsible Progress, which called for a local government that hears residents and puts their interests ahead of political parties.
“That endorsement reflects what we have been hearing throughout this campaign. Residents want responsible spending, protection for their neighborhoods and officials who listen before decisions are made,” the campaign said.
On Saturday, 23 Morris Township Republican Committee volunteers knocked on 2,500 doors in a final weekend effort to speak directly with residents.
“Our volunteers gave up their Halloween to work for change. We are grateful for their commitment and for every resident who took the time to talk with us. Those conversations are the foundation of how we intend to serve,” the campaign said.
The campaign reaffirmed its commitment to represent residents regardless of how they vote.
“We will work for people who support us, people who disagree with us and people who vote against us. Every neighborhood deserves attention. Every taxpayer deserves accountability. Every resident deserves respect. That is what Putting People Before Politics means.”
