DOVER — The Dover Police Department has received a $7,000 grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety to support increased impaired-driving enforcement as part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.

The funding will allow the department to conduct saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints aimed at identifying and removing impaired drivers from the road. The enforcement mobilization runs from August 19 through Labor Day, September 7.

Statewide, the Division of Highway Traffic Safety awarded more than $511,580 in grant funding to 106 local law enforcement agencies, along with $191,153 to the New Jersey State Police, to support the effort. Dover was one of five Morris County departments to receive funding, along with Chester Township, Jefferson, Parsippany-Troy Hills and Riverdale, each also receiving $7,000.

Attorney General Jennifer Davenport said impaired drivers put children, passengers, families, pedestrians, cyclists and police officers at risk on the road, and urged residents to arrange a sober ride, designate a driver, or stay put rather than get behind the wheel after drinking.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 11,367 people were killed nationwide in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes in 2024, accounting for about 20 percent of all traffic fatalities.
