JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP — A 41-year-old woman was charged with Driving While Intoxicated early Sunday, September 6, after her car crashed into a tree near Route 181 and Prospect Point Road, according to police.

Jasmin Laim was arrested by Jefferson Township Police Officer Liam Shernce, who responded to the crash at approximately 12:47 a.m. with Officer Dean Gonnella, according to police reports.

Officers found a black 2024 BMW 3-Series several feet off the roadway in the woods, crashed into a tree with all of its airbags deployed. Laim, the sole occupant, was not injured, according to the report.

Officer Shernce observed Laim stumbling and having difficulty standing upright as she got out of the vehicle, and detected a heavy odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath. Laim appeared disoriented and told officers she had two drinks, according to the report.

Laim agreed to perform field sobriety tests. Officer Shernce administered the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, and Officer Gonnella administered the Walk and Turn and One Leg Stand tests. Laim was unable to keep her balance and nearly fell several times, and the One Leg Stand test was cut short, according to police. Jefferson Township Rescue Squad evaluated Laim at the scene, and she declined medical attention.

Laim was placed under arrest, and her vehicle was towed by Richie’s. At police headquarters, she provided two breath samples. The Alcotest instrument recorded a blood alcohol content of 0.16 percent, twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Laim was charged with:

  • Driving While Intoxicated (N.J.S.A. 39:4-50)
  • Reckless Driving (N.J.S.A. 39:4-96)

She was issued the summonses and released to a family member.
