Meet Layla: She is looking for a new chapter in her life

0

MORRIS COUNTY — Meet Layla! She is a two-year old Yorkie Maltese mix. She experienced a rough start at life but is ready for a new chapter!

She was used for breeding by her original owner who soon abandoned her in an apartment with another dog. They were alone for nearly three months with limited food and water until W.A.R stepped in. It was discovered that Layla was pregnant, so she safely delivered six puppies while in foster care. Her pups have all been adopted and now it is Layla’s turn!

Layla is very sweet and aims to please. She takes time to warm up to new people, but once she does, she is a lovebug!

The quickest way to Layla’s heart is with treats and belly rubs. She is extremely food motivated. Her favorite treats are lamb lung and chicken. Layla LOVES belly rubs! She could lay on her back for hours with someone petting her.

Layla is low to moderate energy. She enjoys going on daily walks but when inside, she just lays by your side. She would prefer to have an owner who is home most of the day to keep her company.

Layla does well with other dogs and would be fine in a home with cats. Because she is still a shy girl, it would be best she went home with kids above the age of 13.

If you are interested in adopting Layla, please fill out an application by clicking here.

MADISON — Volunteers and donors are needed to the Rotary Club of Madison’s “End Hunger 3.6” event, scheduled for 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 9, in the Simon Forum and Athletic Center at Drew University, 36 Madison Avenue.

“Volunteers are particularly needed Friday evening to set up and for the Saturday afternoon shift. The Saturday shifts are particularly suited to church, youth and Scouting groups, said “End Hunger 3.6,”  said Chairman Ellsworth Havens.

Investors Foundation, with its $5,000 donation, is the lead sponsor for the project to fight hunger in the area.

The “End Hunger 3.6” event takes its name from the fact that someone dies of malnutrition or starvation in the world every 3.6 seconds, according to the Rotary. Organizers hope to package 250,000 meals.

They include rice and beans, pasta with tomato and basil, mac and cheese, and oatmeal. The meals will be distributed to local hunger-based charities and organizations that help the impoverished.

An estimated 900 volunteers are needed for the event, including 400 at each two-hour shift and 60 lead volunteers working throughout the event.

Organizers figure about 50 Rotarians will prepare and set up the venue the day before the event.

Both volunteers, and financial contributions such as the grant from the Investors Foundation, are needed for the March 9 event.

For additional information, contact “End Hunger 3.6” Chairman Ellsworth Havens at ellsworthhavens@msn.com or (201) 400-6357; Jeannie Tsukamoto at (973) 410-0723, or click here. To donate click here.

Last year’s “End Hunger 3.6” event saw more than 800 volunteers from 29 Rotary clubs gather to provide 180,000 meals and raise more than $54,000.

Obituary of Luke Warbeck, a Junior at Boonton High School

Luke Warbeck

BOONTON — Luke Warbeck, 17, Lincoln Park, died tragically in an accident with his father Jon, on Tuesday, February 19.  Luke was a junior at Boonton High School with plans to graduate in 2020.

Luke and Jon Warbeck

Luke was born on December 20, 2001, and it’s fair to say that when he entered the world, things would never be the same. Luke’s parents were amazed at his curiosity about how all things mechanical worked. It was not long before he was taking apart engines to test his ability to get them back together. Luke was a gregarious and mischievous kid most of the time, but always respectful of others. Besides being so mechanically inclined, his favorite class in school was woodshop. One teacher described him as a very talented woodworker. Luke had a very special relationship with his father. They spent more time together than many fathers and sons and they shared so many common interests. Luke’s dream was to someday have his own construction company like his father did and he surely would have been a great success. Luke was always enterprising. From mowing lawns to clearing snow, he always found a way to earn some extra money.

As a young kid, Luke was on the Lincoln Park Swim Team, and he was also a Boy Scout, reaching the rank of Life Scout. He also fell in love with riding dirt bikes and quads since the early age of five. After construction, riding became his second passion. As a young boy he learned to run heavy construction equipment while working with his father. He was a natural in any machine and could run many of them like a pro. Since getting his driver’s license in December, he had fun plowing snow as well. He simply loved to work and was good at whatever he set his mind to.

As just about any teenage boy should understand, Luke fell in love with his first truck: a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 with a Cummins diesel. He loved it so much that he slept in it for three days when he first got it. He just couldn’t get enough of that truck. Nothing could wipe the smile off of his face and he was just so proud.  He had always enjoyed monster trucks as a little boy, and now he had his own to drive around in.  He had big plans to customize it and make it ‘his’ in every way.

Luke is survived by his heartbroken mom; Gina Warbeck of Lincoln Park, his grandpa; Frank Elefante of Lincoln Park, his grandmother; Patricia Warbeck (nee Kayser) of Carlstadt, aunts and uncles; Joseph Elefante of Pompton Plains, James Elefante and his wife Debbie of Lincoln Park, Andrew Elefante and his wife Donna of Lincoln Park, Toni Smith and her husband Rich of Lincoln Park, Kimberly Warbeck of Elizabeth, Linda Riveros and her husband Henry of Carlstadt, and Dana Pereira and her husband Jeff of Oakland, and his many cousins.  Luke was predeceased by his grandmother Vivian Elefante in 2007, and by his grandfather; John Warbeck in 2016.

Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 24, at Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road, Wayne.  Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 24 at the funeral home, following the visiting hours.

Those wishing to make a donation in Luke’s memory are asked to consider the Pequannock Animal Shelter, 11 Washington Street, Pompton Plains, New Jersey 07444.

Obituary of Jon Warbeck, 50, died tragically on Tuesday, February 19

Luke and Jon Warbeck

WAYNE — Jon Warbeck, age 50, of Fair Lawn passed away tragically along with his son Luke Warbeck age 17, on Tuesday, February 19, 2019.

Jon was born in Passaic and was raised in Lyndhurst and Carlstadt.  He was one of five children and the only son of Patricia and John Warbeck. Like many boys his age, Jon enjoyed getting into trouble. Jon enjoyed riding his BMX bikes around town and he was often found taking things apart and dismantling various objects, among them, his youngest sister’s crib.  Jon didn’t just tear things apart though, he also spent countless hours building as well. It was for this reason there was no surprise that Jon pursued work in the construction industry. He was viably employed at the age of twelve for a company called Trylon Metal Works which manufactured wrought iron railings.   Jon had an outstanding work ethic.  He graduated from Bergen County Technical High School with the class of 1986.  He was awarded a scholarship and then attended the Passaic School of Drafting and Design.  Jon continued his thirty-year career as a General Contractor with various construction companies until in 2013 when he founded his own construction company, Warbeck Construction.

Jon was a Volunteer Fireman for the Carlstadt Fire Department, Ladder 1, he was also a volunteer for Wayne Fire Department, Company #3. Jon was also a past member of Moonachie EMS. He was an avid shooter and was a lifetime member of NRA.

Jon’s life changed forever on December 20, 2001 when his son Luke was born.  Jon and Luke were inseparable and did everything together.  It was clear to anyone that knew Jon, that his true passion in life was his son Luke. The father and son duo often enjoyed riding their dirt bikes and quads, camping, and fishing together. When Luke signed up for the Boy Scouts, it prompted Jon to become a Boy Scout Leader. Jon was an extremely compassionate person, he was giving and selfless.  He always rooted for the underdog and was always willing to defend someone, especially if they couldn’t defend themselves. Jon also had a great sense of patience, especially when it came to children. He had the gift of being able to convey information to someone in a way that they could understand.  Jon enjoyed cooking and could prepare just about anything. He was a fun loving person and was a pleasure to be around.  He was a devoted father, son, brother and friend. He touched the lives of many people and will be sincerely missed by everyone that knew him.

Jon is survived by his mother Patricia Warbeck (nee Kayser) of Carlstadt, four sisters; Toni Smith and her husband Rich of Lincoln Park, Kimberly Warbeck of Elizabeth, Linda Riveros and her husband Henry of Carlstadt, and Dana Pereira and her husband Jeff of Oakland, and nineteen nieces and nephews; Jamie, Justin, Daniel, Jessica, Hannah, Brandon, Charlotte, Harper, Gemma, Rianna, Andre, Bobby, Samantha, Eva, Lily, Gabriel, Jeffrey, Jonathan, and Adrianna. He was predeceased by his father John Warbeck in 2016.

Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday February 24, at Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road, Wayne.  Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday February 24 at the funeral home following the visiting hours.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider donations in his name to: St Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, 575 Woodland Avenue, Madison, New Jersey 07940 or St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memorial Processing, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.

Boonton Alderman Michael Cardillo said “The Cardillo family sends our deepest thoughts and prayers to the Warbeck family from Lincoln Park who lost a son, Luke, Boonton High School student and father/husband, Jon.”

The Boonton school district is providing both the support and spaces for students and staff to come together to help one another. Only together we will get through the next heart-breaking days and innumerable sad days to follow.

The gas station attendant was later identified as Lovedeep Fatra, 22, Pequannock. The occupants of the Ford Transit Van and Nissan Rogue all received medical treatment for minor injuries.
