National Night Out returns to Morris County

MORRIS COUNTY — Morris County’s Annual ‘National Night Out’ returns to Mennen Sports Arena in Morris Township on Tuesday, August 6, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Hosted by the Morris County Park Police and the Morris County Park Commission, this evening overflows with excitement and activities for all ages!

Enjoy free food, free entertainment, free ice skating, free attractions, and giveaways. Explore police, fire, emergency, military, and rescue vehicles, such as motorcycles, ambulances, all-terrain vehicles, fire engines, and squad cars. Dozens of municipal, county, and state law enforcement agencies participate and are available for questions.

Visit the horses of the Morris County Park Police’s award-winning Mounted Unit, dance the night away with a DJ, and play fun games to win prizes. The Morris County Park Police are also offering the popular free Child ID cards, an initiative launched in 2000 that registers more than 1,000 children annually.

With over 5,000 attendees each year, Morris County’s ‘National Night Out’ has been named a National Award Winner since 2007. “We are incredibly proud of the national recognition our National Night Out has received,” says Chief Gabe DiPietro of the Morris County Park Police. “By offering a comprehensive array of participating agencies, we’re able to educate the public on the vast variety of community services available.”

Chief Gabe DiPietro and the Morris County Park Police ensure public safety throughout Morris County, and provide assistance to other area agencies. The department currently patrols park facilities with cars, motorcycles, bicycles, all-terrain vehicles, and horses.

Fire safety commission expanded as governor signs Bucco bill

BOONTON —Assemblyman Anthony Bucco’s legislation bolstering the state fire safety commission with new members was signed by Governor Phil Murphy.

The bill (S1799/A2987) increases the commission to 27 members from 23. The four new appointments will be public members who are knowledgeable and experienced in fire safety matters.

“New faces on the commission will bring a fresh perspective to discussions about fire safety,” said Bucco (R-Morris). “These appointees will be welcome additions to those from organizations already well-represented at the table.”

The governor will designate two members, and two will be joint appointments of the Senate president and speaker of the Assembly.

Thursday Morning Club Awards Scholarship in Conjunction with Dress for Success

MADISON — The Thursday Morning Club (TMC) is a non-profit organization of women dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service.

This year TMC created a scholarship to fund the completion of an Associate’s or Bachelor’s College Degree or to obtain a Certificate of Training.  Eligible applicants had a high school diploma or GED and were clients participating in the Dress for Success Program, an organization that empowers women to achieve economic independency by providing a network of support, professional attire and development tools to help women thrive in work and life. The scholarship is for education-related expenses incurred during the pursuit of a degree or certification.  The scholarship is renewable.

This June, the Scholarship Committee of TMC reviewed the applications, selected the recipient and determined the amount of the scholarship.

TMC and DFS are pleased to announce that the first annual recipient of the TMC Scholarship has been awarded to Simone Roelli.  Ms. Roelli is a full-time working mother and a volunteer at Dress for Success.  Ms. Roelli is also a full-time student at Rutgers University, and, with the help of this scholarship, on track to complete her bachelor’s degree in Accounting by May 2020.

The official presentation of the scholarship will take place and the Madison Community House in the evening of September 16, 2019.

Organized in 1896, TMC is a member of both the New Jersey State and General Federation of Women’s Clubs.  The club offers programs and services to support the community, and its Community House provides a home for a number of sports, recreation, civic groups and the Madison Community House Preschool.  The Thursday Morning Club is a non-profit service organization with over 260 members whose goal is to provide services for the town of Madison and neighboring communities.

Hanover opens cooling stations for residents

HANOVER TOWNSHIP — Please be advised that with the high temperatures expected over the weekend, the Hanover Township Community Center, located at 15 North Jefferson Road, will be used as a cooling center for residents.

The hours of operation will be Saturday, July 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 21 9:00 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Should residents lose power please contact JCP&L directly and report the outage.

If there is a medical emergency due to the power outage please call 9-1-1.

Prosecutor’s Office Honors Ellen Long for 50 Years of Dedicated Service

MORRIS COUNTY — Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp presented Ellie Long with a Distinguished Service Award celebrating her 50 years of service with the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, on Friday, July 19.

Numerous members of the office were present at this tribute to her. Ellie has been a part of nine different administrations throughout her career, and has played an important role in the success of each one. She began her career at the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office under Prosecutor Charles M. Egan, Jr. in 1969 and remains an invaluable member of the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Support Staff.

Prosecutor Knapp said, “Ellie has been and continues to be a key member of the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Juvenile/Missing Persons Unit. We wish Ellie warm congratulations for reaching this impressive milestone and we hope to continue working with her in years to come”.

MADISON — The 17th LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA class graduated in July. The LIVESTRONG® program brings those affected by cancer a significant step forward toward sustained healthy living beyond cancer diagnosis and recovery.

LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA supports cancer survivors through its no-fee program that provides opportunities to engage in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. Survivors are encouraged to come as they are, no matter what stage of wellness they are in.

The 12-week research-based program brings together cancer survivors and YMCA staff trained in cancer care to achieve goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; improving confidence and self-esteem; and ultimately practicing a healthy lifestyle, not only as a part of recovery but as a way of life.

In existence since 2013, the program receives support through donations from charity events such as the Y’s bocce tournament and Y spinathons.

The Madison Area YMCA is a cause-driven charitable organization dedicated to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Generous donations make it possible for everyone in the community to be enriched by the Y, regardless of ability to pay, to develop a healthy spirit, mind and body at any age.

Ryan Steffen Awarded Degree from Miami University

FLORhaM PARK — Ryan Steffen was among more than 3,800 students from Miami University who received degrees during spring commencement exercises Saturday, May 18 at Millett Hall.

Steffen graduated with a B.S. in Business degree, majoring in Business Economics.

Considered one of eight original “Public Ivies” in the country, Miami University is located in Oxford, Ohio. The university is consistently ranked by U.S. News and World Report for its commitment to undergraduate teaching.

Centercourt Athletic Club Hosts $50K Winner Take All Tennis Event

CHATHAM — On Sunday, July 14, Stefan Kozlov defeated Victor Estrella Burgos (6-2, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3) to win the 2019 Centercourt Shootout at Centercourt Athletic Club of Chatham. Kozlov is a 21-year-old American professional tennis player who made his ATP World Tour debut as a wild card at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, RI at the age of 15.

Following the finals, Kozlov was presented with a $50,000 check by Bruce Schonbraun, Chairman, Saint Barnabas Medical Center Trustees.

The event, presented by Saint Barnabas Medical Center, the exclusive healthcare sponsor of Centercourt Club and Sports, featured an 8-player, winner take all tournament held over the weekend.

Man Charged with Distribution and Possession of Child Pornography

MADISON — Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp, Acting Chief of Investigations Robert McNally, and Chief Darren Dachisen of the Madison Borough Police Department announces the arrest of Gary Anderson, 44, of Madison.

It is alleged that Anderson utilized his home computer to upload images of child pornography and distributed said images between the dates of December 16, 2018 and July 18, 2019.

The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office was first alerted to the computer upload by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Anderson has been charged with two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child for the Distribution of Child Pornography in violation of N.J.S.A 2C:24-4b(5)(a)(i), a crime of the second degree and for the Possession of Child Pornography in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4b(5)(b)(iii), a crime of the third degree.

After Anderson’s arrest, he was transported to the Morris County Correctional Facility pending a court appearance scheduled for Friday, July 19.

EDITOR’S NOTE: A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, this defendant is presumed innocent until he is proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Unemployment Rate at Historically Low 3.5%

MORRIS COUNTY — Employment levels in the Garden State increased in June while the state’s unemployment rate fell to an historic monthly low, according to estimates produced by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The state’s unemployment rate fell by 0.3 percentage points to 3.5 percent — the lowest monthly rate since state-level records began in 1976 — and below the national unemployment rate of 3.7 percent.

Total nonfarm wage and salary employment in the state increased by 10,200 in June to reach a seasonally adjusted level of 4,204,600. Gains were realized in both the private (+9,600) and public (+600) sectors of the state’s economy.
Looking at the longer term, from June 2018 – June 2019, employment in New Jersey was higher by 47,600 jobs, with gains recorded in both the private (+45,400) and public (+2,200) sectors of the New Jersey economy. Since February 2010 (the low point of the last recession), New Jersey’s private sector employers have added 410,900 jobs.
Based on more complete reporting from employers, the previously released total nonfarm employment estimate for May was revised higher by 600 to show an over-the-month (April – May) decrease of 7,000 jobs. Preliminary estimates indicated an over-the-month decrease of 7,600 jobs. The state’s revised May unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.8 percent.
In June, employment increases were recorded in eight out of nine major private industry sectors. Industry sectors that added jobs were professional and business services (+3,000), trade, transportation, and utilities (+2,600), manufacturing (+1,000), information (+800), education and health services (+800), construction (+700), leisure and hospitality (+600), and other services (+100). The financial services industry sector was unchanged over the month. Over the month, public sector employment was higher by 600 jobs.
