DOVER — A Dover woman was charged with Driving While Intoxicated on the morning of Sunday, August 23, after police said she was seen swerving and crossing the double yellow line on Penn Avenue.
Isela Carranza Lopez, 51, was arrested by Dover Police Officer Michael Cordes following the stop near Penn Avenue and Second Street at approximately 10:04 a.m., according to police reports.
Officer Cordes was on patrol when he observed a silver 2016 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck traveling east on Penn Avenue while driving on the center double yellow line, according to the report. The truck swerved within the travel lane several times and crossed over the double yellow line multiple times. When Officer Cordes activated his emergency lights, the truck pulled to the right, drove over the curb, then pulled back into the middle of the travel lane before stopping.
Carranza Lopez provided her insurance and registration but not her driver’s license, according to police. Officer Cordes detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverages coming from her. Because she did not understand English, Officer Ulises Corona responded to assist with Spanish translation.
Carranza Lopez was not wearing shoes and had watery eyes, according to the report. She was unable to maintain her balance during the Walk and Turn and One Leg Stand field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest.
Her vehicle was impounded by Bunky’s Towing. At police headquarters, Carranza Lopez agreed to provide breath samples. The Alcotest instrument recorded a blood alcohol content of 0.213 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
Carranza Lopez was charged with:
- Driving While Intoxicated (N.J.S.A. 39:4-50)
- Failure to Maintain Lane (N.J.S.A. 39:4-88)
- Careless Driving (N.J.S.A. 39:4-97)
- Failure to Possess a Driver’s License (N.J.S.A. 39:3-29)
She was issued the summonses and released to the custody of a responsible adult.
